Black Owned Subscription Boxes

I like to try new things, but am notoriously lazy when it comes to discovering new brands. I’ve started exploring subscription boxes as a great way to find interesting products with minimal effort. Here are a few I’ve tried.

Curlbox

During the pandemic I wanted to refresh my hair care routines. I’ve been natural for over 15 year and found myself using the same products and brands over and over with good, but not great results. So I used the time in the house to experiment with my hair. I ordered a few Curlboxes and discovered products I really love. The best part about Curlbox is the value – I got entire new hair care lines, as in 5-6 full sized products for $25. Natural girls know hair products can be expensive so Curlbox is perfect for trying new things with low commitment. Here are some of my favorites

  • Flawless by Gabrielle Union: I believe this box came with 6 full sized products, including shampoo, conditioner, leave in, stylers, and a scalp treatment. I loved the entire range. After my first twist out, I thought the products were a bit weighty but after that first day, my hair FLOURISHED. My favorite product is probably the leave in conditioner. I even use it on my braids or as a curl / twist out refresher
  • Mielle Rice Water Collection: I believe this was more of a maintenance box. It had a nice curl lotion, a mask, vitamins, and a split end treatment, but my favorite from the box was Rice Water Shine Mist.
  • ULTA box. One of my biggest pandemic hair goals was perfecting my wash and go. I figured out a routine I love but couldn’t resist giving this Wash and Go Box a try. I had mixed results, but I LOOOOOOOOOVE the Pattern Gel. I had tried Pattern products before and was meh on them, BUT THAT GEL?!? A wonder. I chronicled my Wash And Go in the video below.

Forvr Mood

Jackie Aina did exactly what she needed to do with her candles. They just smell so good! They are layered and complex. It almost smells like you’re burning two candles at once, something I often do to blend masculine and sweet scents. So when the opportunity came, I gladly forked over my coins for her quarterly subscription. Here’s what I’ve tried so far:

  • Matcha Business is my absolute fav. It smells warm with notes of coffee so it’s not too sweet. Here’s the description from the site:
    • Top: Hazelnut Coffee, Almond Milk, Honey
    • Heart: Coffee, Lavender
    • Base: Vanilla
  • Left on Read: I tried burning this in my office and didn’t love it but when I burned in the foyer with another more neutral candle, I really enjoyed it.
    • Top: Tropical fruit
    • Heart: Coconut, Coconut Milk
    • Base: Caramel

Cocotique

This is a recent discovery for me, via Monroe Steele. I’m not a makeup girl – y’all have seen my one make up look in these videos. Makeup stores can also be overwhelming. So this is a great way to try new things. Plus, the brands in the box are black owned which is a big plus for me. I’m on the quarterly subscription for the Makeup Lovers box, but they also have a monthly subscription.

I talk about Forvr Mood and go through a Cocotique Box in the video below:
